NUTRITION PROJECT

Under the nutrition programme, Soyalac - a mixture of millet, groundnut and soya beans was distributed to children below 5 years of age every 14 days. Each child was given a packet a day. Soyalac is analysed by the Nigeria Stored Food and Agriculture Research Institute - Kano.

The 5 year age group of children was chosen for the following reasons;

  • this is the age group most affected by illness and disease.
  • children in the age group have a rapid growth and development rate and if they are given a healthy, balanced diet on a daily basis, they will grow and develop at the normal rate of healthy children.

    The Nutrition Programme continued for 5 months after the funding ceased. The majority of children in all the four communities showed considerable improvement, not only in their body weight, but complexion, hair colour and rate of growth also.

    Challenges faced in delivering the project included

     Poor attendance during the rainy season.

     Mechanical error of the weighing scales.

     Some parents report that the children do not want to eat the Soyalac, especially if they can’t afford to put sugar in it.
